The ceremony of the Whirling Dervishes Cappadocia is an 800 year old tradition in Turkey, and consequently an important part of Turkey’s cultural heritage. In fact, UNESCO proclaimed this unique ceremony an Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. The Sema ceremony represents a spiritual journey; the seeker’s turning toward God and truth, a maturing through love, the transformation of self as a way of union with God, and the return to life as the servant of all creation. A important piece of cultural history that you should not leave Turkey without watching and understanding.
We will pick you up from your hotel an hour before the ceremony begins and take you to the Saruhan Caravanserai in Avanos. The Saruhan Caravanserai is a renovated building that was one of the camel caravan stops used by businessmen on their journey from the far East to Istanbul and the Grand Bazaar to sell their wares. The Dervish ceremony lasts 50 minutes. We will then drop you back at the hotel
